Meet Alice, the Clinical Head of Rehab at Our Surrey Care Home!

This week at our Surrey care home, we’re delighted to introduce Alice Bruce, our new team member at CHD Rehab.

Alice has an extensive and impressive background in healthcare, so we can’t wait to share more about her journey!

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Clinical Head of Rehabilitation at Surrey Care Home

My name is Alice Bruce, and I recently started my new role as Clinical Head of Rehab Services at our Surrey care home.

How long have you been working at CHD Rehabilitation?

I have been working with CHD since June 2020, leading on tracheostomy training. I then started my new role in January of this year.

Can you share a brief background of your journey so far in the care industry?

I have an extensive background as a physiotherapist, having worked within the NHS for 11 years. I’ve worked in many settings, including both acute hospitals and rehabilitation.

Throughout my career, I have worked with a range of patients and clients, all with varying conditions and care needs.

For the last  5 years, I have been working as the team lead physiotherapist in an intensive care unit, providing rehabilitation and respiratory support for critically unwell patients.

I’m passionate about all things rehab and respiratory, with a dedicated interest in tracheostomy and ventilation.

What reasons prompted you to begin a career in care?

I always knew I wanted to do something within healthcare, working with others to (hopefully!) make a difference. I finally decided on becoming a physiotherapist after undertaking some work experience.

Can you tell us more about what your average day looks like at CHD Rehabilitation?

An average day is always busy! Usually, my day involves spending time with the teams at our rehab centres, getting updates on resident progress and plans, attending multidisciplinary team meetings, supervision sessions with the team, clinical input with tracheostomy and rehab residents, liaising with other professionals and family members...and a bit of management and organisation in there too!

What’s the most rewarding part of working in care?

For me, the most rewarding part of working in rehabilitation is seeing improvements in our patients’ ability to do things that they may not have been able to do before. I love seeing the impact that this has on their independence and happiness.

I’ve also found it very rewarding throughout my career to see how we can all learn from one another; working together really does achieve great things!

What makes CHD Rehabilitation different?

In the short time I've been at CHD Rehabilitation, I've found that the openness and friendly attitudes of my colleagues set them apart, making for a very enjoyable place to work.

Alongside this, I love working with the ethos that anything is possible for our residents. I believe this is what makes us unique, and makes CHD Living the ideal team to work with.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? What are your hobbies?

I have a toddler, so I don’t have much spare time these days!

As a family, though, we particularly enjoy going for walks and going on holiday; we are keen skiers, and we try to go skiing at least twice a year!

Can you sum up CHD Rehabilitation in 3 words?

Friendly, passionate & quality care (sorry, that’s 4 words!)

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Alice for taking the time to talk to us.
