Tell us a little bit about yourself. What’s your name, and what’s your role at CHD Rehabilitation?
My name is Grace and I’m an assistant psychologist.
How long have you been working at CHD Rehabilitation?
I’ve been part of the CHD Rehabilitation family for just over 1 year now.
Can you share a brief background of your journey so far in the rehab world?
I became interested in rehabilitation during my previous role, where I worked for a service that cares for people with complex disorders. My journey in the rehab world is still relatively new, but I enjoy learning from the team around me.
What reasons prompted you to begin a career in rehab?
Many of the people we care for have experienced life-changing events that threaten their ability to live independently. I love being part of a team that strives to give these people a second chance at leading a happy, fulfilling life, regaining as much of their independence as possible.
Can you tell us more about what your average day looks like at CHD Rehabilitation?
On the average day, I will usually have one-to-one therapy sessions with individuals who require psychological support. Each session is different, and is based on the person’s individual needs. I also undertake some neuropsychology assessments, and spend regular time in supervision with a neuropsychologist. I also regularly work together with speech & language therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and nursing teams to help individuals achieve their rehab goals.
What’s the most rewarding part of working in care and rehab?
Usually, I get to see the most rewarding part of my work when someone is close to being discharged. Once they’re at this stage, you can start to see all of the hard work coming together.
Have you had any particularly memorable experiences with a resident or colleague? If so, can you give a few details?
My most memorable experience was working with a gentleman who’d had a brain injury and was very keen to go home and live independently. There were lots of barriers in his way, but as a team, we managed to work with him to make sure that it was possible for him to return home. We helped him to become more independent, and that was really memorable.
What makes CHD Living, and in particular CHD Rehabilitation, different?
We are led by the individuals when it comes to the care and therapy we provide, and we take into account individual differences. We also have a strong team of people with different levels of experience and this allows us to learn new skills from each other.
What do you enjoy most about your role? Do you have any interesting experiences to share?
I love working with individuals to help them learn new strategies for managing their daily life, or their emotional wellbeing.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? What are your hobbies?
I spend a lot of time with my friends. Since lockdown, though, this has mostly been via Zoom. I also watch a lot of cooking shows, and I like trying new things.
Can you sum up CHD Rehabilitation in 3 words?
Personable, fun, caring.
A big thank you to Grace for taking the time to tell us about her role at CHD Rehabilitation.
