How to stay positive when things get difficult

As humans, we’re naturally wired to fluctuate emotionally. We all have good days and bad days – the extent of which can depend on significant life events that we may incur. Even the most seemingly positive people go through times of difficulty – but there are measures we can take to try and reduce the impact of negative life events on our mental wellbeing.

We all face obstacles, large and small, throughout our lives that test our emotional strength – but looking for the positives wherever possible can make a significant difference. So how, exactly, can you ensure you maintain a positive outlook?

Engage in regular, gentle exercise

It can become more difficult, as we age, to remain agile. It’s important not to let this put you off, however, and try to engage in gentler forms of exercise wherever possible. Exercise releases endorphins (our feel-good hormones), giving us an instant mood lift and, over time, can help us to think more clearly and positively when challenges arise.

Try engaging in exercise with your loved one – this could include venturing outdoors for a walk, or gentle yoga from your armchair.

Surround yourself with positive energy

It’s surprising how impressionable negative energy can be on your overall mood. It suppresses your ability to think positively, and instils an overall negative perception on life. It’s important to try and surround yourself with people who radiate positivity, and look for the good in every situation. You’ll soon start to notice your thoughts becoming more optimistic, and your general mood will begin to lift.

Take up a new hobby

Focusing the mind on something mentally or physically stimulating, particularly something that you enjoy, can really help to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Picking up a new hobby acts as a great distraction technique, giving the brain less time to deviate towards negative thoughts.

Whether you choose to try knitting, reading or meditation, learning a new hobby can instil a real sense of accomplishment – something that can help to improve self-esteem.

Shift your perspective

Sometimes, all that’s needed to boost your mood is a shift in perspective. It seems so simple, but the way in which you perceive situations can influence your overall attitude to life. Rather than seeing yourself as a victim in a negative situation, try to assess how you can take control of it – what can you actively change? By taking a step back and thinking about the steps you can take, the situation will seem less daunting and you’ll be in a better position to tackle it head-on.

Eat a healthy diet

Eating a healthy, balanced diet not only ensures we’re getting the right nutrients - it also acts as a preventative measure, helping to stave off potentially harmful health conditions.

Overall, being in a better physical state helps us to stay positive. Eating a healthy diet has also shown to have a direct impact on our mental health – when our brain is nourished with healthy foods, it rewards us by improving our cognitive functions.
